Blogging Your Small Biz
Before starting a new blog it helps to define what your goals are for it because the goals you define will be the foundation of your blog possibly for years to come.
Somebody who wants to build a blog to promote an existing business will do things differently than somebody who is building one to express thoughts online.
Whether you have already got a business blog or are about to start one, take a moment to think about the following factors.
Target Audience
Think about who your business target audience is for your blog. Are they business owners? Are they entrepreneurs? Are they tech-savvy? A young tech-savvy male may be more likely to follow your blog than a mom who doesn’t even know what RSS is for instance.
Is your target audience somebody who is likely to carefully read through your posts in detail trying to glean as much information as possible or are they a “I need it now!” kind of person? These factors will affect your content and what you put in your business blog.
If any of the things I’ve mentioned here don’t make sense to you, don’t worry as I will cover them all in the course! I’m just trying to give you examples so that as you take the lessons you’ll better understand what aspects will be more applicable to your particular blog.
Promoting Your Brand
If you haven’t done so, I suggest you read my post “Getting Social” which is one of the ways that I bring people to my website and establish myself in the industry. One very important thing about branding is that it is very difficult to change later on.
Right from the start think about what image you are trying to project. Are you promoting your business as an authority in the field or as an informational entity? If you are promoting your business as an authority then think about graphics – do you have a logo for your business that you can use? Make sure you do because when you start blogging your business and using social media, you are going to need consistency throughout every facet of marketing your business. And that is basically what blogging your business is.
Is Your Small Business Changing Direction?
If you already have an established blog, think about where it stands currently on the points mentioned above. What kind of audience does it currently attract? Is that the audience you want and what image are you projecting for your business, if any?
Keep in mind that if you have to change direction there is no issue with doing so, just make sure you carefully plan what direction you would like to take your blog.

If you know more than 10 people in your industry, chances are you know someone who declares themselves to be a social media expert. Or at least knows someone who claims to be. How do you measure their claim of expertise and if it is legitimate? Here’s a short quiz for them. Ask each question and take action accordingly: 1. Do you have a blog? If your expert answers ‘no’, that may be OK. He or she may be using Posterous instead. If they look at you with a deer-in-the-headlights expression, end the meeting there...

by Bob Blanchard Getting your small business a decent ranking on the search engines is getting more and more complex, but is necessary for your business success. You see, most business owners feel that simply plastering up a website is adequate enough for them. This is just not true. It’s like moving your business into an office park with no business name outside. Sure, you’re there in a...
