If you know more than 10 people in your industry, chances are you know someone who declares themselves to be a social media expert. Or at least knows someone who claims to be. How do you measure their claim of expertise and if it is legitimate? Here’s a short quiz for them. Ask each question and take action accordingly:

1. Do you have a blog?

If your expert answers ‘no’, that may be OK. He or she may be using Posterous instead. If they look at you with a deer-in-the-headlights expression, end the meeting there and do not waste your time.

If the individual answers ‘yes’, get their blog address and check it out. If they have been blogging for less than 2 years, and they have no particular explanation, again end the meeting.

Any social media expert has been somehow participating interaction for a long time.

2. When did you start social media?

“About 6 months ago”. Yeah…Good-Bye

“2 years ago”. Not bad, worth talking to

“In 1993″. They better be referring to a BBS they ran out of their basement

3. What is social media?

“Blogging and Twitter and stuff”. Excuse yourself for a bathroom break and don’t come back.

“All of the conversations going on between people and people and businesses and such online”. Not bad.

“A trendy term to describe a new kind of mass media”. Totally acceptable.

4: What’s a social media campaign?

“Voting something to the front page of Digg using my proxy server and 35 computers”. Flee the scene, and get to a minimum safe distance as soon as possible. The Digg brigade may be on its way. Whatever you do, don’t hire them. While this is a valid tactic (I guess), it’s not a campaign. Nor does it generate long term results in most cases.

“Developing a great message and then reaching out to people, while giving them an incentive to ‘pass it on’”. Yeah, OK, keep ‘em around.

“I have this great software that will put a link to your site on 21,000 forums and 10,000 blogs…”. Push them down the garbage chute. Don’t be seen with them in public.
5: How do you monitor social media for a client?

“Huh?” Hopefully your next step is obvious.

“Google alerts”. Not bad, but wait and see if they add in stuff like subscribing to Twitter searches and the like.

“I use a 3rd party tool”. Fine, but make sure they do more than plug in some keywords and wait for e-mails. A human being needs to review what the tool reports or its worthless.
6: How do you measure ROI?

“Oh, shut up”. Perfectly OK, especially if the expert turns purple for a moment first. They’re just sick of hearing this question, which means they’ve been around the block a few times.

“It’s complicated, but here’s a high-level view…”. Nice!!!

“I track clicks from Twitter”. Nope, sorry.
7: How do you build an audience?

“I auto-follow 20,000 people on Twitter”. If you’re OK with it, kick them in the groin for me. If not, nod politely and move on.

“I follow interesting, relevant people on Twitter, comment on relevant blog posts and try to get into the conversation”. Home run. Try not to weep with joy.

“We need to figure out the campaign first”. Good answer. Give them a hypothetical campaign to be sure, but clearly you’re on the right track.
8: Do you offer a guarantee?

“Yes, I’ll get you 1000 links and 20,000 clicks”. See number 7, first action.

“Yes, that I’ll work my butt off for you”. I like it.

“No, because we’re marketing to people, and it’s hard to say what they’ll like/not like, or what might happen in the world that will affect behavior”. Also good.
9: How did you learn all this stuff?

“Oh, I read this book I bought from Amazon.com”. Wargh. By the time that book went to print it was out of date. No go.

“I’m always learning”. Good answer.

“I read a lot of blogs, and try to use as many different tools as I can”. Also good.

“I go to conferences”. Yeahhhhhh. Might be OK. Answers to the other 9 questions should tell you.
10: How does social media impact SEO?

“It doesn’t”. Slap them and tell ‘em that’s from Ian.

“It builds links”. That’s half the answer.

“It builds relationships that turn into links later”. HIRE THEM NOW.

Information taken from conversation marketing

Getting your small business a decent ranking on the search engines is getting more and more complex, but is necessary for your business success. So what the heck is “findabilty” anyway? Findabilty refers to people’s ability to find you or your business online. You see, most business owners feel that simply plastering up a website is adequate enough for them. This is just not true. It’s like moving your business into an office park with no business name outside. Sure, you’re there in a nice new office with your staff and brochures poised and at the ready, but nobody driving by would know it. The same holds true for your website, especially if it is a crispy new domain name. If your company is not on the front page of Google when your potential clients search the web for you, you may as well not have a company sign. For instance, if you sell bicycles and accessories it would take a great deal of work to get first page results when someone simply types in “bicycle accessories” for their Google search. However, more likely than not if someone were to type in ‘bicycle accessories anytown, anystate), you have a great shot of being on that first page of search results. Almost always, Google knows the demograph of the user typing the keyword search by past searches or actions from that user. Google collects information and user habits on the fly in searches, which can be advantageous to a small business. The key is to put these searchable keywords within the code of your website. The main component of findabiltiy is picking proper keywords and “tags”, tags are buzz words used in website coding. Now you may say, “Okay, they found me on the first page of Google, so what?”. Increased page ranking means more traffic to your site, more traffic means more potential customers and leads, more leads means increased conversion potential, and more profit! It may not mean a direct sale over the internet, but it may be a phone call or a walk in. And in this slow climbing economy it’s another tool small business owners and entrepreneaurs can use to get an edge.

Thank-you for doing your your homework and checking out My Sensible Team! I’m Bob Blanchard, the owner of MST and I personally appreciate you taking the time to get to know us. I encourage you to look around and explore the MST website. Read all the posts and use the information provided to give you a clear understanding of where you are in terms of your business and where you would like to be. My philosophy is not to dump my services and a sales pitch on to people, but rather offer them information and resources so they can make an informed decision regarding what they want from their website. Sometimes people needlessly scrap their whole website when it is not necessary. On the other hand there are times when a full make over is in order. Either way, MST is here to legitimately help you solve a problem or answer questions. So whether you need to incorporate multimedia, set up a company blog, or create a website from scratch, you can trust My Sensible Team to be your partner in business.

by Bob Blanchard

Is your small business using Facebook yet? Do you even know where to start? Well don’t worry, because I am going to give you a concise guide to using Facebook for business. Sure, you have a personal Facebook account and you have 300+ friends with 300 farms. But when it comes to not knowing where to start using Facebook for your business, you are not alone. Small businesses are grappling for traction to get on their feet and while conventional methods of internet marketing are still required, social media adds a more compelling means to get noticed on the web.

First Step: Review Your Existing Profile

More likely than not, you already have a personal Facebook account and are familiar with some of the ins and outs. If you have not set up an account on Facebook, go to http://facebook.com and register.

There are two ways to go at this point in terms of how you will use your personal profile. You may want to have your profile set up so you are only connected with current friends and family members. On the other hand, you may want to unite your personal and professional realms.

Personally, I usually recommend keeping the two worlds apart – to a limit. I utilize my friends list on my personal account for my business page and adjust the privacy settings accordingly.

Here are some main areas to survey on your profile.

Go to the Edit Profile section of your profile to edit each of these areas:

You can get to the Edit Profile area by first clicking the Info tab, then the edit pencil in the top-right corner. Also, it may help to know that anytime you edit much of this information—such as changing your profile picture, your relationship status, your bio, etc.—a notice goes out to your friends in their News Feeds (unless you previously adjusted your privacy settings very tightly!).

Remember to click the blue Save Changes button on each section if you make changes!

You also want to hide your year of birth as this adds an extra layer of security.

Update Your Bio

Check to make sure your bio and contact information is the way you want it, ideally in a first-person, conversational tone. I also recommend filling out the “mini bio” section just under your profile picture (click the edit pencil)

Review Your Photo

If at all possible have a professional head shot taken or even a few. With a few head shots taken you can use them in your other social sites and web pages for a neat, consistent look. If you can’t go professional find a well lit area where you can hang a sheet in the background and have friend take some photos that you can embellish on later.

Being that our focus here is social media, you may want to stay from being over dressed. If you look at my photo on the about page, although I am wearing a tie, I chose not to wear a traditional blue blazer, red tie and white shirt. It also depends on your business. Most times a polo shirt or button down may be in order. Other times even a decorative t-shirt would not be out of line.

You will then want to crop your photo from the shoulders on up, so it fits nicely in your Facebook thumbnail. Remember too, you want a recent picture that is fresh. This builds integrity when others are getting to know your business.

Grow Your Network

Facebook allows you a maximum of 5,000 friends which gives you a lot of potential. Having key contacts as friends allows you to maintain a more personal connection with them.

For business networking purposes, actively seek new friends who may be knowledgeable in your industry, prospects, media contacts, people you admire, friends in other forums, and so on. Just be careful to not overdo the outgoing friend requests in any one session. Facebook views this as potentially spam behavior and you run the risk of your account being deactivated. Twenty requests at a time is a safe number.

To find new people to add, use the Friend Finder, Invite friends by email, and join relevant Groups and Facebook pages. When sending friend requests, always add a personal message.

Second Step: Set Up a Facebook Page

Once you’re content with the way you’ve chosen to use and configure your profile, it’s time to set up your Business Page, which used to be referred to as a “Fan Page.” Previously, we would join these pages by clicking the “Fan” button; however, Facebook changed this to their omnipresent “Like” button.

With Facebook’s 500 million active users—half of whom log on daily for an average session time of 55 minutes—having an active Facebook page helps gain tremendous visibility for your business and meets your prospects/community where they are. Contrary to popular belief, you do not need to “max out” your personal profile first. The time to start a Facebook page is right away!

What You Need to Know About Facebook Pages

You need to have an account on Facebook in order to create a Facebook page.

Your Facebook page will be tied to your personal profile as the admin of your Facebook page; however, only you and Facebook know the connection exists.

You can have an unlimited number of Facebook pages.

You can have an unlimited number of fans (Facebook users who “Like” your page).

Facebook Pages are public—anyone can find and view your page whether they are logged into Facebook or not.

All content posted on your Facebook page gets indexed on Google.

You can target your posts by location and language.

You can add applications to your page, including your own custom content—video, rich text, graphics, opt-in box and more.

You can add additional admins (highly recommended).

All admins have equal rights to administer your page, including adding and removing other admins (choose with care!).

You can’t post content on your Facebook page from your personal profile (unless you use an @ tag from your profile and have your settings for that post set to Everyone).

Select your page title and category carefully as they cannot be changed once set.

Study Other Facebook Pages, look at the information on your own website. and peruse the online forums of your industry. When adding the facet of social media to your already existing website, you are poised to set your small business online empire up for success!
